The following is a report from a trip to Copenhagen, then on to Helsinki, Lahti (Finland), lappeenranta (Finland), as part of a family holiday and visiting my in-laws in Finland. We had booked a family room again at the Gatwick Hilton South Terminal, which included car parking for the week and we got a reasonable deal at about £280. Our flight to CPH was with Norwegian, an airline I had not flown with since 2012. We had an early departure (06:30) and despite being at the airport, we were still up with the larks. After breezing through security at LGW we made our way into the south terminal and eagerly scanned the board for our gate number only to discover that out flight was showing a departure time of 11:20am – disaster!. Several cups of coffee later, and 3 yes 3 gate changes, we finally boarded our ride to CPH which took off about 12:30pm. There was no apology from anyone for the delay, and passengers were not even offered a complimentary cup of tea of coffee. Really poor service and we are trying to get our money back.
We arrived at CPH to clear skies and spent a nice time in the city. The log below is from Gatwick prior to departure, and CPH on arrival and OTT’s seen from the city. the main south terminal building at Gatwick has limited views , so to see anything FR24 was used and then a walk to the restaurant windows upstairs was required. We managed about 3 coffees in the restaurant which we made last about 2.5 hours!.

The initial stages of the flight were a bumpy affair as we climbed through the remnants of an earlier thunderstorm.
We arrived in CPH to clear skies. On rollout we could see the 2 stored Norwegian 737-MAX8 which are in parked amongst the hangers on the far side of the airport. DC-8 LN-PIP is also still visible.

Sunday was another travel day and the weather gods had conspired against us again. A severe thunderstorm resulted in the evacuation of ground crew from the airport. There was nothing to do but wait!

After collecting our car at Helsinki, we drove north to Lahti. About 30mins north of here is the small airfield of Lahti-Vesivehmaa. There is a museum at the airport that boasts the only Blackburn Ripon IIF in the world (apparently). There are about 18 exhibits crammed into a hanger making them very difficult to photograph, plus a couple outside. Vampire remnants VA-3) is located next to some containers. Some of the exhibits are in varying states of completeness, and there are numerous parts of aircraft recovered from crash sites. Entry was only 5 euro for adults kids go free. Out on the airfield were a few light aircraft. There are no fences to separate the parking area from the GA ramp, other families were wandering among the aircraft so we did the same!

On Monday we drove east to the city of Lappeenranta. The airfield was devoid of aircraft except for a US registered MU-2. A Hughes 369D of the Finnish Army was seen landing later in the week but that was it!. Even the aeroclub was shut. The South Karelia aircraft museum was open (but not visited) and in thier yard was what appeared to be the fuselage and wings of an Antonov 2 which looked like an example that has been on display at a service station in UTTI for several years.

Thursday saw us heading back to Helsinki with a stop at Malmi. This airfield is under threat from development but there are still about 20-30 aircraft here. All photos were taken through the fence near the small terminal.

Once through security it was up to the Fly Inn which is upstairs in T2. A good burger and a beer can be had here, with the advantage of excellent airport views. All photos below are from the Fly Inn or from onboard our aircraft.

We arrived back at Gatwick on time at 18:00 local, but there wasnt anything of note. It was then a swift drive home back to the Luton area which astonishingly only took an hour.
